Yes, I'm very happy to know of the Spybot thing now since our computer was always seeming to run slow. The computer guy told me to run it at least once a week because no, it's not automatic.
I guess we've gotten pretty lucky so far. We bought our first computer over 15 years ago and it died about 5 years ago. Then my husband's uncle who works for a large "to be un-named" company got us a used computer from there that they were planning to trash. Of course they wiped everything off first. Well, that's the one we're still using now. The monitor is old and clunky but a pretty nice size. To plug in stuff to the CPU you have to pull it out and plug it into the back of it.... that's the archaeic thing I hate the most. But for now, it gets the job done! It's really only for recreational use.
