We did something similar: the local carpet store gave us 2 big pieces of carpet (rest pieces), free of charge. The carpet was just larger than the dimensions of x-pen. When Pepper had some 'accidents' on the carpet, we just replaced with another piece.
We have only recently packed the x-pen/carpet away: he starting climbing out of cage, and we don't want to risk injury...
