I think fasting is bad for you. Anytime you eat less the 1000 calories your system starts to break down, you lose muscle first because muscle requires the most calories to survive. Ten pounds of fat need hardly any calories to stay on your body; ten pounds of muscle needs lots of calories, so your body goes into survival mode and gets rid of muscle first. Each time you lose muscle, your metabolism slows, so you end up needing few calories then you did before. I always recommend people eat a little even when they are sick; to avoid losing muscle. Women, who go on starvation diets, are setting themselves up for failure. Your nutritionist is telling you about science and what scientific research has proven, she's not trying to sell you something. Remember, popular ideas aren't necessary truthful ideas. However, I don't think you should force a dog to eat during certain illnesses, for example, acute pancreatitis, at that point you are suppose to give the system a rest, but this isn't really the same as fasting.
