Tattoo's can fade overtime, change shape as dog grows and become hard to read, and can even be removed.
Micro chipping is the latest and more evolved way of doing a permanent mark, you can register your chip number on-line to a national data base and it can never be removed as it becomes a part of the skin and can not even be felt after a while if properly inserted.
Do a little research on the type of chip that will be ideal for your situation... for an example, if you plan to travel overseas you may need an "euro filled" chip, if you just stay in the US the older model will be fine, there is also the ISO chip that is the latest technology but useless here in US because most shelters do not have the scanner that will detect it !
