| Diet advice for liver disease/cancer Hi everyone.... I am seeking advice for a fellow-forum member from a yahoo group. When I read her story my heart broke, this is how we lost our 10 yr Sassy last year. Here is her story...... Hello all,
In 2008 I posted about Miss Puddin' who underwent surgery for removal of a
large cancerous tumor on her liver. A part of the left lobe of the liver
was removed along with the tumor. Forward to this April -- her tummy felt
very solid again to me though she showed no other symptoms of concern to me,
so I took her in to the vet for a check up and he found her liver enzyme ALT
was very high. As of 6-09-10 the ALT was 1673 ( the normal reference range
for this lab is 10-100). On 6-15-10 she had an abdominal ultrasound and the
vet said it showed extensive liver disease in both the middle section and in
the left lobe. He suggests we do not attempt surgery again as these tumors
are filled with many blood vessels and they bleed very easily (she stopped
breathing during her last surgery and also required an artificial blood
supplement as she lost so much blood). The vet called her his little
miracle dog that she even survived.
This time, as a result of the ultrasound on 6/15, he said he'd be surprised
if she makes it another year. It doesn't look like that will happen with
this diarrhea starting as when I asked how I would know that her condition
was getting worse he said there would be vomiting, diarrhea, loss of
appetite, and possibly a bleed into the abdomen.
For the past 3 mornings, I have found a watery diarrhea on the papers in the
bathroom. I was not sure which dog it was from since no one presented
themselves as not feeling well but I suspected it was Puddin'. At 5am this
morning I found a very watery diarrhea that looked somewhat pink tinged to
me and checked Puddin'. A sniff test told me yes, it was from her. She is
not acting sick. I called the vet to see what I should be giving her for
this diarrhea and my dh is on the way to pick up some medicine (I forgot the
name, begins with an "m' I think).
I had started her on a homemade diet that was supposed to be approved by Dr.
Dodd. It consisted of cod, white potato, sweet potato, zucchini, and green
beans along with Vit E, Vit B compound, Ester-C, zinc gluconate, di-calcium
phosphate (which I can't find anywhere), a multimineral complex, eggshells
and canola old. Then I read (somewhere) that carbohydrates (which would be the potatoes) feed cancer. (is this true or has anyone else heard of this?) So I went back to tuna fish and Innova Evo chicken kibble for her.
My question is, are there any special supplements I should be giving her?
Is there a special diet I should be following for Puddin' specifically for
liver cancer? I want to be sure I am not feeding her anything that is
feeding the cancer.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Carol in Mid-Mich, and Miss Puddin' May suggestion, I am may be entirely wrong....feed Dr. Dodd's diet eliminating the potatoes. Would that hurt anything? Other diet suggestions? Unfortunately we didn't have time to try anything new with Sassy as the reason we found her cancer was that her abdomen filled with blood from bleeding out. Thanks so much for reading this and any advice that I can share with her. |
