I'm sorry about your family members baby. But my whole life, my entire immediate family has slept with their dogs (big & small) and nothing has happened. A dog can also run into a wall, hurt their head and die (it happened on here) but that doesn't mean you shouldn't let your dog run around your house and carry them all day. We risk our lives every day when we walk out the door. So I don't think just because people are letting their dogs sleep in their bed means they're risking their lives and risking pain for our dogs. I also think it's totally perfectly great to let a dog sleep in it's own pen or den too.
