It is a slimy black substance which causes hair loss on the ears, hocks, and the end of the tail. Some people think it is a fungus, while others think it's "rabbit mite". Either way it is not a pretty sight on your yorkie. It can be caused by cold weather or high humidity. Silky yorkies are more prone to it than soft coated yorkies. I do not shave their ears too much. I just scissor them. Only my show dogs get their ears shaved when their being shown. As I try to prevent this from happening. I also have found that if their is too much oil, creme on them. It makes their ears cold. Which prevents the air to gets to them, which I believe has caused my dogs leather ear. As far as conditioners go. I never put it on their ears. If some does by accident gets on them. I rinse it off thoughly.
