^ True. Some dogs just don't like each other and sense things we can't.

However, by you picking him up, the behavior was probably encouraged. Sounds like he was resource guarding (you being his resource). I definitely wouldn't allow it. The dogs you say he's around, does he see them often? Because if he only sees a certain numbers of dogs, he will get along with just them but not others. They need to be socialized to all different kinds, not just the same dogs over and over.

My dads dogs are like this. They get along great with Jackson because he comes over 1-3x a week but other dogs they just bark and bark and bark.
