I think that's a good idea. When I started training AprilLove, I would ring the bell myself and say the potty command, and open the door, she would go and I would treat. This was just to associate ringing the bell with the door opening. After a few days of doing it myself, I started touching her paw to it, treat, then taking her out, and treat again after potty.
She caught on quickly, and used it for awhile to just make me jump up every few minutes, lol.
But after that got old, she would use it for potty only. And she would ring it real loud if she had to go real bad
