Dogs are adaptable animals- so they have been for a long time now. Which is only one of numerous reasons why humans keep them in their homes and close to their hearts.
To be honest and not to sound mean but Cody will probably miss her for a week or two...then move on. On the return trip home he will be delighted. A switch will not change much of anything nor will it alter a relationship. Except that Cody will return home sitting on a dime when asked. Feelings of the heart are a human emotion. We feel that it will be heartbreaking for the dog. That this might damage the dog. It will not. He will grieve but move on- unlike a human who may grieve for the whole duration. This does not mean Cody loves her any less...it just means he's a dog.
