There are times when he's sleeping and I'll keep looking at him until he moves or I see his belly moving. (And I was the same way when my kids were infants, though I am guilty of having touched one of the kid's hands when they were babies so they'd move ... and I wonder why they didn't sleep through the night!)

I get very emotional "at that time," and I think a lot of women do. If it was something that was affecting you a lot or you were letting it occupy your mind more than occasionally, then you'd probably be wise to seek out some help.

But these dogs do become like family. Truthfully, I always liked dogs but I never would have been called an animal lover. Even my last dog, who I did love, didn't elicit the same feelings I have for Charlie. I think when you have the right "fit" with your dog, it's a whole different story.
