It's not about "it happening and being aware", but trying to avoid fearful or painful situations during the Fear Imprint Stages. For example, the first Fear Imprint Stage is between 8-11 weeks. If a puppy is exposed to the vacuum for the first time during this period, he might always be afraid of it.
