All the dogs I've ever owned needed to have their eyes cleaned. Large and small breeds. I think it's like us humans, when we wake up in the morning. It's part of my morning ritual, I take a soft disposable cloth and clean their eyes after breakfast. Doing this once a day prevents it from accumulating.
