I have never had a regular vet take my dog out of the room for an exam and I would question them if they tried and find another vet if they insisted.
I do go to a specialty hospital that is also a teaching hospital and they will sometimes take the dogs out of the room for an exam because they are showing new interns things in the back, they always ask if it is okay with me first and won't take the dog if you don't want them to. I always agree because I do not think there are enough specialists out there today and am happy to help more get started. They always tell me what they are going to do first anyway and come back withe a full report of anything they found.
