I have never experienced this, either. All the vets I've used always do everything right in front of me. I just wouldn't feel comfortable unless I can see exactly what is going on. If you don't like the way this vet does his examinations, ask him to examine your dog in front of you. If he does not agree, I would find a new vet. As someone said above, it's like taking your child to the pediatrician. You want to see everything that is going on.
