Free running is fine. They can monitor themselves, etc. It's the forced exercises (walking on leash, agility, things they don't really have a "choice" per say in). I've also found this is more important in larger breeds, but it is definitely still important in small breeds as well. But for example, a Great Dane cannot do strenuous exercise until 18-24 months of age, this is simply not the case w/ Yorkies.

Btw, I'm hoping to get Jackson involved in agility in the near future! It's just $$ issue holding me back from taking classes right now, but we did buy a set of weave poles he picked up really fast. I think he'll love it and it's great bonding/training experience.
