Here is an article about the stray population in Italy...they are in an awful state, I wish the government could figure out a solution...

"there are more than 32,000 stray dogs and 128,000 stray cats"

This is the approximate figure from Feb 2009 and just from the Naples (Campania) region, I can only speculate on how much that number has grown in just over a year.
