At 5 1/2 months he really should be at least a little more interested in playing and eating. He definitely sounds ill. Please take him in tomorrow. There are so many things that can be wrong with these little ones. Rhett had pneumonia when he was about 3 months old. It sapped his energy completely. We thought it was stomach issues, but on the xray for the barium swallow they found the pneumonia instead.
You might want to take a video of him coughing/gagging and take that to the vets with you. Puppies, like kids, never seem to display their symptoms while they are in the doctor's office.
