Here's a good example of a vet not preparing a newbie for the whelping process. Although, x-rays were performed, the vet told this girl all she needed was dentifloss and scissors. Never giving her any other information.
This why studying is always necessary and most of all a great mentor that is well versed in the breed you have chosen.
