If you don't trust him completely, please get to know him better or find a different vet. Have you asked the questions from the anesthesia sticky?

I wouldn't worry that he sees a lot of big dogs. They can do just fine seeing both. And some vets don't push early spay/neuter. They leave it up to their clients. It's all in how he does the surgery/anesthesia and how he treats you and your pup.
