When we brought Zhoie home, at dinner time we always put her in her ex-pen. We did that until she was allowed to have full run of the house, meaning totally housebroken.
She had a small bed in our dinning room and at dinner time she goes to her bed until we are finished.
She hasn't had any type of human food, she it's like she doesn't even acknowledge it. I too, can sit on the couch eating chips or whatever and she doesn't even look at it nor attempt to smell or anything.
My suggestion would be, anytime food is out, he needs to go to his safe place until you are done eating. Hope, this helps.
