I donno if I would ever put one down because if it but they do get very sad. When I was growing up we had a lab mix who was a wonderful dog and after having her many years we got a beagle mix puppy and it was like the lab mix was his mom she cleaned his ears, taught him things and was really like his mom, well years later a disk in her back went bad and she could not feel her back legs and she had to be put down and it was terrible not just for me and my parents (it was our first dog and she was amazing) the beagle mix was sooooo sad lost weight, would not eat, and his hole personality changed. Had we not had another beagle mix puppy that we got a year before the lab mix died I think he would have just died himself. Now of course the two beagle mix's are inseparable now and someone actually has to stay with one of them if the other has to go to the vet because they are so attached. I imagine when they are very old and have the separation problem when one dies it doesn't take long for the not eating and stuff to cause there health to go down hill fast due to there age and instead of mourning two losses one right after the other they are trying to just do it at once or might not think they will be able to watch the one who is healthy deteriorate after his buddy is gone. I dont know the situation so but they do get very sad and it effects them a lot when there companion dies and its a hard thing to watch.
