Hi guys,

I wanted to share my new discovery with everyone (did a search, but didn't find it posted anywhere). It's little lily clothes and accessories, which are especially great for smaller babies (its designers are Yorkie owners themselves). They have a lot of great items! Spending on pets in North America has surpassed toys and candy, standing at $35-billion annually, an increase of 68% over the past decade, according to Forbes Magazine.

And most of the action is at the luxury end, catering to the fastest-growing segment of pet buyers: empty nesters and young professionals looking for a family substitute. Surveys show 43% of dog owners celebrate their dogs' birthdays, 45% take them on vacations and 63% regularly kiss them.

Lara Alameddine, a 25-year-old Vancouver native with a film degree from the University of British Columbia, does not think such behaviour is crazy. Nor do her clients -- Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Paula Abdul, Justin Timberlake and Tori Spelling, all of whose dogs wear Little Lily, the "pet-a-porter" label created by Ms. Alameddine and partner, Daniel Dubiecki.

Ms. Alameddine lives in Los Angeles with her two impeccably dressed toy Yorkies, Oscar and Lily (the label's namesake). But Ms. Alameddine is no mere celebrity dog chaser. She and Mr. Dubiecki, a filmmaker, started the business a year ago after Lily cut her paw on a piece of glass. They could not find a bootie small enough to cover the healing wound, so they customized their own.

And made a whole bunch more -- for everyday use for dogs of all sizes. Then they moved into clothing, which flew off the shelves. Now they are selling a full line of Little Lily styles, from athletic tanks to formal dresses, leather shoes to mini-Ugg boots, at more than 200 stores around the world, including five in Tokyo where little dogs are gods and no price is too high to pamper them.

Shoes in the pet range run $110 and up; clothing ranges from $75 for tanks and pjyames to $100 for a rhinestone-studded dress.

Ms. Alameddine's business is just one of many to cater to dog-owners who want to spoil their pets. The Hollywood film studio Warner Bros. launched a luxury range of clothes for dogs last year that includes a $2,000 satin dog coat studded with Swarovski crystals and lined in pink silk, and a diamond-encrusted platinum dog-collar pendant embossed with the initials S.D. -- for Scooby Doo -- that costs $27,000.

The Scooby Doo also features crystal-studded collars and leads ($1,400 a set), dog bowls ($850), travel cases with brushes, nail clippers and flea powder ($1,350), and "unisex" pillows and beds -- blue on one side, pink on the other ($330).

Canine luxury extends beyond apparel, too. Urban Dog, a Toronto fitness spa for dogs that opened in December, boasts cushioned athletic flooring, fresh filtered water, a hydrosurge therapeutic pet-bathing system, sandblasted glass doors, a giant wreath made of bones and play areas for large and small dogs, complete with dog playground equipment. A day at the dog spa costs $35.

For dog owners who cannot bear to be apart from their loved ones, a growing number of pet-friendly travel outfitters are offering everything from winter hiking jaunts in the Catskill Mountains of New York to tubing trips down the Yampa River in Colorado. Dog Paddling Adventures, a Canadian company offering cross-country skiing, hiking and canoeing expeditions for pets and their owners, says its business has quadrupled since it opened in 2000. One outfitter even plans to offer a $5,000 dog hike from Aspen to Crested Butte, Colo., with a stay in a luxury inn and the return trip in a chartered plane.

Ms. Alameddine, who is in Vancouver this week for the launch of her line at a local shop, insists there is reason to the madness -- at least, her end of it.

"Rough pavement is hard on paws," she says.

"It's worse in winter, with ice and salt, but even parks can be hazardous, with the chemicals they use on the grass. Vets are very supportive of what we're doing."

Likewise, clothing provides protection against sun and cold for dogs with light coats or delicate skin. Oscar and Lily always fly in fleece sweats, she says, because it can get cold in airplanes -- even inside their cushioned tote.

Ms. Alameddine says the clothes are not for all dog lovers.

"Everyone has a different kind of bond with their dog. As long as the owner has the best interests of the dog in mind, that's fine with me. I've seen neglected and abused dogs -- they're the ones that need our sympathy. Not Oscar and Lily."

Nor Tinkerbell, Paris Hilton's Chihuahua whose regular appearances on The Simple Life, often wearing complete Little Lily outfits, have earned Tink almost as many fans as her owner. Close watchers of last Wednesday's SL2 premiere may have noticed the Liliboots Tink wisely wore to avoid the cow pies at the Bull-It Rodeo. Not that Paris actually put the Chihuahua down.

But that is nothing compared to the pet-couture lines such as Burberry and Louis Vuitton. Top dog designer to the stars is Fifi & Romeo, which made the cashmere sweater Reese Witherspoon's gay Chihuahua, Bruiser, wore in Legally Blonde. Sales took off after the movie, at $400 a pup.

Ms. Alameddine works the custom end too. Priding herself in creating the dog world's smallest shoes, she has also made its largest dress: an XXXL polka-dot frock for an English mastiff. She has customized basketball tanks for Shaquille O'Neal's Yorkie, and is now working on Tori Spelling's mixed-breed wedding party, including a Pug bridesmaid and Jack Russell best dog.
