I wanted to update this thread. After much thinking about and talking it over with my husband, we decided to not pursue adopting that sweet little girl.
I still want another yorkie. But I'm going to stick with my original plan. I want Rhett to continue on through his obedience courses and get his Canine Good Citizen certification before I bring another baby home. I want him to be the best big brother he can possibly be.
We've also found that Rhett has a special talent. In addition to loving kids, he adores sitting with my youngest daughter while she reads out loud. We found out that the county next to us has a therapy program in their schools that uses dogs to sit with 4th graders while they practice their reading skills. We are going to pursue getting Rhett certified to do that. That's going to take a lot of time and dedication and it wouldn't be fair to take that time away from a new puppy.
I know when we are ready, there will be another rescue who needs a forever home. |
That's awesome! I read about that in a magazine. It encourages kids to read since they're reading to the dog. I think it's super cute and an excellent idea. I've worked with kids for years and reading is the hardest thing to encourage them to do now. I had to work with a 7th grader that had the reading capacity of a 4th grader. It was really sad.
