I'm sure that it is why the French practice is featured in the movie. The English characters, not knowing, throw away the "dead" lavender they find on the window sills and the scorpions start moving into the villa.
I wish I had known about the lavender when I lived in AZ. My mother sat down next to one at Sunday brunch at a Phoenix hotel once, lol.
