Default When is heat cycle after litter?

Hi guys, I have been asking around and get so many different answers so I thought I would ask you guys since everytime I do I get the right answer!
The heat cycle of a female that has had a litter, I was told 2 different things, the heat cycle remains the same before the litter, having the litter does not change the cycle? I was also told that the heat cycle begins counting 6 months after the birth? I understand that some females only have a heat cycle once a year and some every 6 months. I also know that some dont have a cycle till they are 18 months old or not at all. So my question to you the pros- how do you determine the next heat cycle of a female after she has had a litter, do you go by her last cycle or count from the birth forward?????? Any help would be appreciated.
