the Heartgard site does say if the whole dose is not accepted, redosing is recommeneded. And I think some of these companies will pay for treatment if the dog is on the recommended dose and tested annually. That probably would hold true if the owner is splitting the dose. I think you are right. It probably is a rumor started on the internet. That's where I first saw it and that's why I asked my vet. I know vets aren't infallible but on something like this I felt confident in his answer.
