My husband passed away suddenly a year and a half ago at age 47. We live in a small town where everyone knows everyone. When I got home after being at an out of town hospital with him for 4 days, my Maddie never left my lap. She is the type that barks when someone walks past the window facing the street and runs to the door everytime the doorbell rings. She also runs to greet anyone that walks in our house. During this time, she never left my lap. I have many, many, people coming to the house to offer condolences, bring food, etc. She never moved off my lap or barked at anyone or anything. The only time she would move would be if someone walked behind the chair I was sitting in, then she would jump up to the back of the chair and stand there as if she were protecting me, but not acting aggressive.

I have two teenage daughters still living at home. At night, my Maddie will rarely bark. It takes a thunderstorm or really loud noise to get her to react. However, if the girls are gone at night and just she and I at home, it seems she hears every little noise all night long. I don't know if she is protecting me, or if she thinks I can't protect her!!!
