There's no reason for you to be panic, and just because something is rare doesn't mean it's life threatening. The point is your vet is testing and taking blood levels and keeping ahead of the whole thing. If the low calcium levels were caused by the diarrhea, as a result of getting something from digging in the compost, he may not even have hyperparathyroidism.
