Sometimes situations like this can be mixed blessings. She's going to learn to adapt to the new situation and become more confident when you're not around. It will take a little while, but the stress will be less for her the next time it happens. It will be a good learning experience for her. I think a lot of us worry about what would happen if we could no longer care for our dogs. Experiences like this will show her, and you, that she can adapt and continue to be a happy dog.

Unfortunately, I don't have any great advice for you! It will be difficult, and you'll see her shadow everywhere you go. Bring some pictures of her, and if you ever need to talk about it, you know where to go. Right here, where people understand.
