I had heard stores that dont sell food are usually Ok with dogs but I was to afraid to just try it so I was trying to get some ideas from other people who have carried their dogs places!

You're right. Any store that carries food items or serves food cannot allow animals because of federal law. Most stores that do not carry food are usually friendly to small dogs. Just watch for any signs on the doors.
