I don't remember whether you got the dog from a rescue or not. Did your husband research the breed and was the husky small dog tested before you got him? I don't know anything about that breed or what the breed traits are like, but it is something to keep in mind.
Rhetts Mama was right on with the suggestion of training. Dogs can be helped with separation anxiety. Plus, the dog might get better once he settles in. It might sound awful, but there are medications that can help the dog with this too. It is better than letting a dog suffer with anxiety if training and behavior modification doesn't work.
From my experience with IG rescue, I can tell you that some of my fosters have come into my home and its like they have always lived with me. Others have taken a week or even a month to settle in. What I do know, is they have all gotten better and living with them got easier as they learned our routine, got comfortable, and learned to trust me. Every dog is different and there is no set schedule for when that happens.
I do think you should give the dog a little more time, and try to be patient with the disruption to your household and schedule.
Good luck!
