I have some equipment from the AKC junior line also, I got it really cheap when Toys R Us was discontinuing the line... recently I saw some at TJ Maxx also.

You can play around with equipment at home if you are doing it just for fun. I think if you plan to run in real trials or anything, you should start with a class so that you know you are doing it the right way.

I was only using it for fun, playing with the jumps and stuff, just to give the kiddos something different to do rather then just run around outside. I never planned to do anything more with it, so the cheapo equipment I find is perfect for me.

I paid 7.99 each for a couple of bar jumps and a tire jump.

I have also seen weaves and tunnels.
