 Unsure about Grooming...what to ask for?

Bailey's about a year and a half and I've only had her groomed once, around Thanksgiving. I trim around her face and bottom every once in a while, but her overall hair is growing pretty long and I think for summer I should get it cut. I wasn't very happy with her last groom. When I took her in I didn't really know what to ask for but I said maybe like a puppy cut. The lady said her hair is very thin and if they gave her a puppy cut she would look bald? Anyone know what she's talking about? They kept it longer, which is fine, but I didn't like how blunt it looked. I guess I would like her looking more shaggy/teddy bear cut-ish.
So, with the thin hair thing in mind, what should I tell them to do this time? I will probably be trying a new place.
