The best way is to take away any opportunities for him to eat or play with his poop. I would not scold him but I would just distract him. I usually wait for my Teddy to go and when he turns around to show an interest in it, I just call him over and give him a toy, treat, whatever, as I clean it up. Sometimes he is faster than me, but it gets better with consistency.
