We've used benadryl for Daisy in the past. She is 8 lbs and her dose was 1/4 of a 25mg tablet. Dogs need alot more benadryl than we do which is why the dose seems high. As LadyJane said, double check the dose with your vet.
You could wrap the pill in a piece of chicken....in our house, pills inside of pieces of chicken or banana gets the pill down with no effort. Very rarely have I seen a spit out of a pill when it involves chicken.
I hope the benadryl works for you. It did nothing for us!
