the whole idea about crate training is that a pup is not going to pee or poo where she sleeps ... or eats. at least that is the theory. Your pup wants out of there afterwards and be with you .
My suggestion would be an expen with pee pads , and have your little one closer to you.
I honestly had no problems with my two when they were puppies using the pee pads , sometimes slip ups would occur , but no big deal. When my Shih tzu was brand new , she was so small she could fit in my hand. I slept on the couch for the next few months with her laying on the carpet right next to me. SHe caught on right away where the pee pads were and what they were for thanks to my yorkie .
Neither of my pups had their food or water withheld . I believe it is wrong to do that esp. in such a tiny puppy . the smaller they are the moer food they need to eat , and potty , pee.
My yorkie is now over 2yrs old and goes potty both on the pee pads and outside , but she is older . The shih tzu uses the pads always , and is just over a yr old. Never any problems , no crying , or anything .
Patience and consistency is what it takes to fully train a dog. esp when so young and small.
hang in there !
