I also use the crate to train, only difference is she doesn't get freedom in the house unless or until she goes outside. Here's what I do:

wake up and take her out. If she pees and poos she has 20 min freedom of only two rooms. Kitchen and living and only bcs they are attached. I lay blankets down in the living room to act as a barrier. After about 20 minutes we go outside. If she does her business she gets 20 more minutes inside. If not I'll crate her for about 20-30 min then try again. If she goes then she can play inside. If not, back in the crate. Initially they spend a LOT of time in the crate but it's teaching her that she's only allowed to go in ONE place. It's also teaching her to hold it bcs she doesn't like to "go" where she sleeps.
