I have hardwood floors and let Levi free roam while I am gone. We've never had any problems with it, but he is also very used to jumping from couch to floor - does it all day long, whether I am home or not. I think it just depends on the dog. I'd probably be more hesitant if he was a puppy or a senior (he is two years old), or if he had limited access to the couches.
