I would do exactly what your vet suggests.

I know when I first brought home my yorkie puppy last month, it was a challenge to get her to eat. I had to hold her food bowl and water bowl for her to eat and drink. I was also giving her Nutrical several times a day as I was told to do. Now that she is 16 weeks old, she is eating and drinking on her own. I have cut back on the Nutrical. I also make sure there is food and water available for her to eat and drink thru out the day.
