The problem is having an unprotected pup (vaccine-wise) being exposed to possible disease. Even just walking down the street, sniffing where other dogs have been, is sufficient to get them sick.
The waiting another 7-10 days after the last set of shots is to ensure that they've had time to take effect and the pup has achieved sufficient immunity to fight off disease.

Carry him to and from the car... don't let his feet touch the ground till you are in your Mom's house.
It may seem like a pain now, but preventing disease when you can is so much easier for all involved than treating it.
