My daughter was a gymnast. When she was 17 she did some tumbling run and landed funny. The whole gym heard this POP and I thought for sure she broke her ankle. I took her to the emergancy room and the ankle was x-rayed. Turned out it was a bad sprain. It healed after a few weeks but she found after that the ankle would roll easily and she would resprain it. I finally took her to an orthopedic surgeon and found out that the POP sound we heard were a ligament and tendon tearing off the bone. She had to have the ankle reconstructed. The surgeon said she would have been better off breaking the ankle than damaging the ligaments and tendons.
