I do the same. After seeing one of Barb's posts of her whelping boxes, I had my hubby build the same kind. It's a little bigger and I use an rubbermaid clear bin in one end of it while they are little. Maybe the 1st 3 weeks and then when they start being able to move around more, I take the bin out. Mine is big enough to put a grass mat on the opposite end from where they sleep so once they start moving, they automatically go to the grass mat to eliminate. Then when they get even bigger and start being able to almost climb out the sides - around 6 weeks, I put them in an ex pen. But I don't have any pig rails and have not had a problem but I agree, probably should not be using a lot of bedding material.
