That's good advise about moving the pad, gradually, towards the door. It is not an impossible dream to have them trained both ways
. Mine go outside when I am home, and use the potty box or grasspotty inside, if I am away for awhile.
You can train them to both. I would recommend doing a search on bell training, its a great tool for potty training outside
