When they say they could give you an appointment at 3:40pm: You reply: Don't you see emergencies here? That is why I specifically came to you. He needs to be examined by the vet.

If that doesn't get you in: Go to a different vet.

And well, I'm onery (Texas word maybe...means stubborn and irritating ) and I would have sat right down in that waiting room until a vet saw me. If longer than say fifteen minutes went by, I'd start talking to my pet loudly and telling him how I felt about an emergency vet who wouldn't see him. You're just a nicer person than I am.
