  There really shouldn't be a time frame put on this because all dogs are so different.  Ellie had horrible teeth.  She had oral surgery and now we do homecare.  So the annual rule doesn't apply to her.  We will be approaching three years with no cleaning and she doesn't need one.  Her vet is extremely happy with her teeth and gums.  And some dogs could start looking like they need one every 3-6 months.  Your vet should make the call.
 If your vet said it's time to do it, then it can be unsafe to wait because of the bacterial concerns.
