Rachael, I waited a little longer but Sophie Kate as spayed at 8 months and she was 3.5 lbs at that time. My Vet spoke with me in detail on the benefits of having her spayed and explained exactly what she would be doing and the equipment she would be using.
My suggestion is look into getting him neutered, talk with your Vet and other Yorkie Talker. It's scary but in my opinion overall it best for the dog health.
