I didn't know people put down a dog just because it couldnt be house trained by them. I guess I'm still too naive to understand some people's rationale when it comes to dog owning. I would gladly take an "un-trainable" dog and train it myself, even if I had to take a couple of weeks of leave to be with it constantly to be consistent with the training routine. I don't know much about training dogs, but I would never give a dog up just because I couldn't potty train it.
