Wow 15 years! What a life Nikki has had. Could he be missing his old owner??(I'm sure you take great care of him)
It sounds like what my Cocker started doing before I learned that had dementia. He'd cry at night and sometimes get mad at me as if he didn't recognize me and bark, then hide. He'd howl and cry all the time in the end. After the vet sad there was nothing else left to do I decided to let him cross the bridge.
You are wonderful for taking in an older dog.
