Get a good detangler/coat conditioner and always spray it on his coat before you brush. i use Chris Christensen Ice on Ice and Nature's Specialty Quicker Slicker. Depending on teh coat type you can use a slicker brush or pin brush to get the mats out and follow up with a metal comb. the slicker brush can be used on a cotton coat but most don't like it on a silk coat. As far as pin brushes go, you do NOT want to use a brush with little plastic balls on the tips. these will rip at the coat. I like CC pin brushes and Madan pin brushes.
